A Message from the Secretary-Treasurer

Georgia ITE Members and Friends,

With the structure of our March Monthly meeting changed to a webinar, it was not easy to provide you with section announcements from our committees. Thus, this extra special and exciting second newsletter of the week!

Please check out each of the sections below for an update of what has been going on, and what we are looking forward to with the section. As of this moment, we are still sorting through and planning when our April meeting will be and the topic.

I hope you all are staying safe and healthy. Have a fantastic Friday and weekend.

Meredith Emory, PE
2020 GAITE Secretary-Treasurer

Monthly Meeting/Webinar Wrap-Up

What a great turn out and success! Yesterday, Thursday, March 26 we were able to host our first self-produced webinar using our Georgia Section ITE YouTube channel! The viewership topped out at 138 people and included viewers from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida and Alabama. Our speaker, Marsha Anderson Bomar, discussed current and upcoming MARTA projects as well as some of the response efforts of MARTA to COVID-19. Thank you Marsha for your flexibility in the adjusted meeting format!

If you would like to view the webinar, it is still accessible on our channel at THIS LINK.

The Georgia ITE board would like to thank Paul Slone our Marketing/Communication committee chair for successfully navigating the challenges of changing our meeting to a webinar and providing on-site (socially distant) support for the event. The board will continue to look for new ways to offer technical events throughout this time of social distancing and lockdown.

SDITE Student Leadership Summit

The 2nd Annual SDITE Student Leadership Summit was held February 28, 2020 - March 1, 2020. The Georgia Tech ITE chapter put together a fantastic event that topped the number of students and professionals from 2019.

The Georgia Tech team represented the Georgia section well at the Southern District traffic bowl this year, but the University of Alabama at Birmingham rose to the top and will be representing SDITE at the joint SDITE/ITE Annual Meeting in New Orleans this August. Make sure to show your support for our southern district student chapter team if you are attending the annual meeting this year!

Winter Workshop

We were just able to sneak in the 10th Annual Winter Workshop this year before COVID-19 shifted all our spring plans. The joint meeting with ASHE took place in Chattanooga, TN and we had a record breaking 212 registrations this year! However, due to the virus only about 170 of those registrants were able to attend.

Thank you to all the attendees, speakers, sponsors, and vendors that were able to make it such a great workshop even during an uncertain time. Please be sure to thank all the committee volunteers that put in the time to plan and organize the event.

Mentor Program

An announcement email was sent yesterday for the 2020 Georgia ITE Mentor Program. The program is geared for towards young professionals that have been working in the transportation engineering field for a few years and are actively involved in ITE. Each protégé will be paired with a mentor who can provide career advice and professional guidance. The program will include six organized breakfast or lunch meetings held monthly at various locations. Additional information can be found in THIS FLYER.

If you are interested in participating in the program as a protégé please complete the application and return it to [email protected]. You may submit an application beginning April 1, and all applications are due by April 30.

The committee is also looking for mentors for the program. If you are interested in being a mentor to one of the great young members in Georgia ITE please reach out to [email protected]

While the schedule is subject to change, we are optimistic that all of the meetings will still be completed between June 2020 and December 2020.

Outreach and Activities Update

Before social distancing due to COVID-19, the Engineering Outreach committee was able to complete several events including the 2020 Georgia MATHCOUNTS Competition, the Gwinnett Regional Science, Engineering and Innovation Fair, and the Toothpick Bridge Competition.

The next major engineering outreach event, Boy Scouts of America STEM Academy at Georgia Tech, is still scheduled for May 31st to June 5th. The EEA is a week-long event held annually at Georgia Tech by the Boys Scouts of America. Here, young aspiring engineers at the high school levels embark upon a weeks’ worth of hands-on engineering activities while also going on tours to state-of-the-art engineering facilities around metro Atlanta. You can register for this event at THIS LINK.

The activities committe is also looking at a potential TopGolf event in May or June if social distancing is no longer a factor. If your company would be interested in sponsoring, please reach out to Nate Prathaftakis.

Marketing/Communication Update

Our marketing and communications committee has done an amazing job this year increasing our presence on social media and information for our website.

Please be sure to take the time and subscribe to our Georgia Section ITE YouTube channel. Paul Slone has some great archived videos available, and with current events, you will see many more livesteams posted by him.

Additionally, please make sure to follow our offical Georgia ITE LinkedIn page which was created to compliment our other social media platforms. Please thank Bryanna Saunders for her efforts in promoting this page and managing our other social media accounts.

The theme this year is “Vision 2020” and presentations will focus on seeing clearly into the future and learning from the past.
