A Message from the Secretary-Treasurer

Georgia ITE Members and Friends,

I hope everyone is having a great start to the week!

Last week, at our February meeting, we enjoyed getting an update on the Georgia Ports Authority. Registration for the March meeting is already open. At this meeting, Christopher Raymond will give an update on alternative intersections in Georgia and Cynthia Phillips will highlight a recent project in District 5.

One of the benefits of increased virtual meetings is the ability to network with our friends in other ITE sections. This year, one of SDITE’s main initiatives is to facilitate a Section Mentoring Program to generally help build relationships to strengthen the bonds within the District. GAITE is paired with the South Carolina Section ITE. To that end, please see the announcement below about SCSITE's monthly meeting that is scheduled for tomorrow. Registration is free for members and non-members.

There are also several other updates below that you don't want to miss! First, see the legislative update regarding a bill that would make the PELS Board an independent state agency and the changes that would entail. Second, don't forget to register for Winter Workshop. Registration ends on March 3rd. Finally, don't forget your submissions for the SDITE Student Chapter Competitions and Technical Paper Competition. Submissions for both are due on March 1st.

Please continue reading below to see event details and other announcements.

2021 GAITE Secretary-Treasurer

Legislative Update

Unlike other states in the South, Georgia’s Professional Engineers & Land Surveyors (PELS) Board shares a small staff with five other unrelated licensing boards all under the auspices of the Secretary of State. As a result, customer service and enforcement have suffered for decades.  To rectify that situation, HB 476 – The Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors Act of 2021 has been introduced to make the PELS Board an independent state agency, with its own separate budget, its own executive director and staff and its own attorney and investigators to investigate and enforce violations. This legislation will provide the financial and operational independence needed for the PELS Board to properly serve the 23,000 Professional Engineers and 1,200 Land Surveyors whose licensure is critical to protecting the health, safety and welfare of Georgia’s citizens and our built environment. In addition to language changes for how the new Board would operate, there is an item the practicing engineer should be aware of.  Registration will be done annually.  The PDH requirement will also become annual with the requirement of 15 per year.  This legislation has been assigned to the House Regulated Industries Committee and a hearing is pending.

Marketing/Communication Update

Do you ever have great ideas for GAITE but not sure where to send these? Do you have a presentation topic or know of one that would be good for a monthly meeting or one of our conferences? The Marketing and Communications committee is working to update our website to make it easier to find information you are looking for and to communicate with the GAITE board and committees. A “contact us” area has been added more prominently on the website. Under this area there are now links for submitting questions, comments or recommendations to be reviewed by the board. Additionally, you can also submit presentation topic ideas for us to consider!

GAITE now has an official website contact email, so if there are any questions about the website or you need help getting something put on the website, please send details to [email protected]
