Georgia ITE Members and Friends,
I hope everyone is having a good week.
As this year's legislative session is nearing its end, our Legislative Committee has provided us with a couple of updates. The first update concerns the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act 2021 (CRRSAA) funds that are being allocated to GDOT. Additionally, there is also an update on HB 476 which aims to make the PELS board an independent state agency.
Even in this virtual environment there are plenty of ways to be involved with ITE. The Technical, Summer Seminar and Safety Committees are all looking for new members. You can find contact information below. The kickoff meeting for the Technical Committee has been moved to April, so if you join now, you haven't missed out on anything!
Finally, don’t forget to register for the SDITE annual meeting that is taking place virtually April 11th – April 16th, 2021.
Please keep reading for more updates and details.

Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act 2021
On Monday, March 15th, Governor Kemp announced $277 million in Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act 2021 (CRRSAA) funds are being allocated to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to fill in projected revenue gaps caused by the impacts of COVID-19. These additional funds allow GDOT flexibility to advance several strategic transportation improvements in predominantly rural areas. Most of these investments will be on Georgia’s freight network, which are corridors that play a vital role in moving agriculture commodities, manufacturing inputs, and consumer goods between production, distribution, and retail locations in all areas of Georgia. These projects that advance safety and reliability of Georgia’s freight network were previously further out in GDOT’s delivery plans but will start construction a cumulative total of 13 years earlier.
HB 476 – The Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors Act of 2021
HB 476 passed out of the Senate Regulated Industries Committee unanimously on Thursday, March 11th. The bill is pending in the Senate Rules Committee.
HB 476 was introduced at ACEC Georgia’s request and is also supported by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers (GSPE), Surveying and Mapping Society of Georgia (SAMSOG) and Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors Board (PELS Board). If passed, it will make the PELS Board an independent state agency, with its own separate budget and its own, dedicated staff. This legislation was modeled on the existing arrangements in place for the Georgia Real Estate Commission and the Georgia State Board of Accountancy. The legislation will provide the financial and operational independence needed for the PELS Board to properly serve the 23,000 Professional Engineers and 1,200 Land Surveyors whose licensure is critical to protecting the health, safety and welfare of Georgia’s citizens and our built environment.
The planning for the 2021 Summer Seminar is under way. We’re excited to be going back to the King and Prince in beautiful St. Simons on July 18-21. It’s early days and many things are flexible but we are making every effort for an in-person conference, with appropriate backup planning. If you are interested in participating in the program development, please contact Bill Ruhsam (Chair) or Christy Jeon (Technical Chair) at [email protected] or [email protected].
How many of you know someone that would receive value being a member of ITE? The Marketing/Communication committee would like to reach out to individuals who are not active participants within ITE/GAITE. We are seeking assistance from our current membership identifying potential candidates who are roadway designers, transportation planners, and transit professionals to continually grow our membership. For those on our mailing list outside of Georgia, this applies to you as well! Regardless where you are, if you have received a benefit from our virtual programs, we would like to hear from you.
As we are still in a predominantly virtual world, it’s still a great time to invite friends to review our social media and our review past meetings on our YouTube channel that may be of interest. There are many worthy professional organizations and we are not looking to subtract from the membership of other groups, several of which we regularly partner with. We are looking to reach those who are struggling for networking opportunities (upcoming) and continuing education content after 2020. We also have recent graduates, new Georgia residents, and those who have never been part of a professional organization. Let’s reach out and make them feel welcome.
